    Gameplay

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a third-person, open-world action shooter that takes place on Mars in the year 2125, 50 years after the events of the first Red Faction game. Players take the role of an insurgent fighter named Alec Mason with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force (EDF).

Throughout their fight for freedom, players travel through Mars' Tharsis region, divided into 7 sectors controlled by the EDF, with each offerring their own missions, weapons, vehicles and upgrades to the player.

Utilizing improvised weapons, explosives and re-purposed mining equipment and vehicles, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to tear through fully destructible environments in an unforgiving Martian landscape swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire.

    Plot

In the year 2125, mining engineer Alec Mason arrives on Mars in the midst of a conflict between the Red Faction and the oppressive Earth Defense Force (EDF). Alec's brother, Dan Mason, is killed by the EDF shortly after Alec's arrival. The Red Faction, led by Commander Hugo Davies, recruits Alec to join their efforts to liberate Mars from the EDF's control.

After Alec's recruitment, the Red Faction successfully drives the EDF out of the Parker sector. Subsequently, they advance into the Dust sector, the EDF's primary source of income on Mars. Alec discovers the Nano Forge, a device sought after by the commander of the Hydra warship, Admiral Kobel, and the commander of the EDF, General Roth.

The discovery of the Nano Forge prompts the EDF's withdrawal from Dust. Samanya, a Red Faction engineer, utilizes the Nano Forge to create the Nano Rifle, which poses a threat to the EDF.

After Dust's liberation, the Red Faction proceeds into the Badlands, the home of the Marauders and the EDF's largest outpost. Alec, alongside Jon Kepler and Carmen Avila, kidnaps and extracts information from Colonel Broga, commander of the EDF's artillery base, revealing a path of entry through the Free Fire Zone into the Eos sector. Following the Badlands and Oasis' liberation, the Red Faction move into Eos by traversing the Free Fire Zone. Plans to liberate Eos by assaulting the EDF Central Command is thwarted by an unexpected EDF raid on the Red Faction's headquarters in the Badlands, forcing a retreat. The attack resulted in the death of Davies, Kepler and Carmen, leaving Alec, Samanya and a few survivors.

To counter the the impending threat of the Hydra, Alec and Samanya seek assistance from the Marauders and their leader Vasha, Samanya's sister. A deal is established, with Vasha granting the Red Faction the use of their particle accelerator inherited from Ultor to be combined with the Nano Forge, creating a weapon powerful enough to destroy the Hydra. As part of the deal, the Nano Forge would be returned to the Marauders once the war has ended.

To boost morale, Alec and Samanya seize a broadcasting station in Eos, rallying the Red Faction for an assault on EDF Central Command. The final confrontation occurs at Mount Vogel, where the Red Faction and Marauders meet. Vasha's attempt to defend a control tower results in her death at the hands of EDF forces. Alec proceeds to the summit, defeating General Roth and his army. Samanya launches a missile armed with nanites into the Hydra, ending the war.
