Red Faction: Origins is a feature-length television movie set in the Red Faction universe, between the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla and Red Faction: Armageddon. The film was produced by BUFO, THQ, and Universal Cable Productions; and was distributed by Syfy. It was released June 4, 2011, to coincide with the release of Red Faction: Armageddon.
Plot
Set on the Tharsis Martian colony in 2145, Origins centers around Jake Mason, the son of Alec Mason, protagonist in Red Faction: Guerrilla. The story unfolds in the aftermath of the liberation of Mars, a time of tentative peace and rebuilding. Jake, a member of the Red Faction, which has since transitioned from a rebel group to a peacekeeping force, discovers that his sister Lyra Mason, long believed to be dead, is actually alive. The plot thickens as he learns that Lyra has been trained and brainwashed by a splinter faction intent on destroying the Red Faction and taking control of Mars.
The narrative explores themes of family, loyalty, betrayal, and the cost of freedom. It delves into the complexities of post-revolution Mars, a society grappling with its newfound independence and the challenges of self-governance. The setting provides a gritty, realistic backdrop, showcasing a Mars that is still healing from the scars of rebellion and exploitation.

The first feature-length film set in the universe, Origins serves as a narrative bridge in the series; filling in gaps and setting the stage for the events of Red Faction: Armageddon. The film enriches series lore by adding additional personal stories to the epic saga of Martian rebellion and independence.

Reception
Upon its release, Origins received a mixed reception, reflecting some challenges in translating the rich and action-packed Red Faction universe into a narrative feature film format. While some appreciated the deep exploration into the series' lore and character development, many fans of the series felt that the adaptation didn't fully capture the essence of the Red Faction experience as seen in the games.
Film critics pointed out issues with pacing and the integration of story elements from the games, with some suggesting that Origins likely wouldn't resonate particularly well the expectations of the fan base. Despite these critiques, Origins remains a noteworthy attempt to expand the narrative universe of Red Faction, offering insights and backstories that enrich the broader context of the Martian rebellions and the struggles on Mars.
Though it might not have achieved the acclaim of other parts of the franchise, Origins holds a notable place in the series as a bridge between major game installments, as well as a notable exploration of the universe's potential in different media formats.
