The Earth Defense Force (EDF) is one of the few elements that has appeared in every game in the Red Faction series, from Red Faction to Red Faction: Guerrilla.

In Red Faction

In the first Red Faction game, the Red Faction rebelled against the Ultor Corporation and numerous mercenaries working for Masako. The game ended after a Red Faction guerrilla, Parker, called in the EDF to take control of Mars. The game ended with the EDF broadcast, "This facility is now under the command of the Earth Defence Force. Drop your weapons immediately. All armed personnel will be shot on sight." It is presumed the EDF went room to room shooting or arresting Ultor personnel. The EDF then reformed Ultor and had many of their executives placed under arrest.

In Red Faction II

The EDF does not appear in Red Faction II, but in the story, they cooperated with the Red Faction to reform the Ultor Corporation. They also supplied the Red Faction with weapons and declared war on Chancellor Victor Sopot's government. It is known that they remained on Mars after Ultor's defeat.

In Red Faction: Guerrilla

Over the course of the last fifty years, the Earth Defense Force had gone from being the liberators of Mars to being its new oppressors. Under the EDF's control, the people of Mars had no rights, and lived in complete misery. They were commonly beaten in the streets, and EDF officers were allowed to execute civilians without anything even remotely resembling due process.

It was this oppression that prompted a group of miners to revive the Red Faction. The resulting guerrilla warfare led to the EDF's eventual removal from the planet.

Though the EDF has notable leaders, such as General Roth and Admiral Kobel, such leaders are rarely seen in game. The EDF are a largely faceless and characterless enemy. However, this may be deliberate. It is not stated whether the Drones, the body of the EDF, are human soldiers or not. Their very name and sheer numbers might suggest otherwise, detracting from their humanity somewhat. It should be noted, however, that no in-game characters have questioned the EDF's humanity, nor have any suggestions regarding the use of non-human soldiers been made. In fact, the EDF's behavior is quite human; they can occasionally be heard cursing, uttering phrases such as "No one fucks with the EDF!" Firing at them with particularly lethal weapons will even provoke certain soldiers to call Mason a "motherfucker".

It is unknown what is to become of the EDF after the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla.
