Red Faction: Guerrilla is a 3rd person, open-world action shooter set on Mars, set 50 years after the events of the original Red Faction ( the year 2125). Players take the role of an insurgent fighter named Alec Mason with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force (EDF - allies in the first Red Faction). Throughout their fight for freedom, players carve their own path, wreaking havoc across the vast, open-world environment of Mars, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos to the Earth-like region known as Oasis.
Red Faction: Guerrilla is a third-person, open-world action shooter that takes place on Mars in the year 2125, 50 years after the events of the first Red Faction game. Players take the role of an insurgent fighter named Alec Mason with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force (EDF).

Utilizing improvised weapons, explosives and re-purposed mining equipment and vehicles, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to tear through fully destructible environments in an unforgiving Martian landscape swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire. Red Faction: Guerrilla also features a robust multiplayer component, including several modes focused on destruction-based gameplay.
Throughout their fight for freedom, players travel through Mars' Tharsis region, divided into 7 sectors controlled by the EDF, with each offerring their own missions, weapons, vehicles and upgrades to the player.

The game starts out with Alec Mason, the protagonist, landing on Mars and meeting his brother, Dan Mason. As they drive through the streets of Mars, a group of EDF cars nearly crashes into them. This starts Dan talking about all of the horrible things EDF has done to the people of Mars. As he speaks, scenes of cruelty are shown, such as death squads and beatings. When Alec and Dan arrive at their destination, an abandoned lab, they spot a gunship flying in the air. The player is then tasked with destroying the abandoned buildings while their brother keeps a lookout. As the player returns to the vehicle, the gunship returns and orders Dan to surrender, revealing that he was part of Red Faction. When Dan tries to run, the gunship shoots him and Alec. Alec survives but Dan is killed instantly. He returns to Dan's home to find that EDF has raided the house. When the soldiers see Alec they order him to drop his "weapon" (a sledgehammer). Alec is accused of being a part of the Red Faction insurgents by the commander and is placed under arrest. Despite Alec's protests of arriving today which is responded with the commander saying "I guess you work fast." And retorts that Alec had detonators for the remote charges the player used in the first game play sequence. Alec responds to being a mining engineer and having a permit for the charges, which results in the commander pushing him off and retorts once more "It just got revoked!" the commander then orders the platoon with him to shoot and kill Alec. Before he can be killed Red Faction members start engaging the soldiers. As all of soldiers fall except for the commander, Alec picks up the sledgehammer and kills the leader with it. The leader of the Red Faction walks up to Alec and tells him that whether he likes it or not, he is now part of the rebellion.

Subsequently, they advance into the Dust sector, the EDF's primary source of income on Mars. Alec discovers the Nano Forge, a device sought after by the commander of the Hydra warship, Admiral Kobel, and the commander of the EDF, General Roth.

The current game modes include Demolition, Anarchy, Siege, Capture The Flag, and Team Anarchy. Before Siege and Demolition can be played, the player must achieve a certain rank.

Alec's discovery forces the EDF to withdraw from Dust, prompting an artillery attack on civilians, which Alec circumvents by saving essential personnel and resources. Samanya, a Red Faction engineer, utilizes the Nano Forge to create the Nano Rifle, which poses a threat to the EDF.

After Dust's liberation, the Red Faction proceeds into the The Badlands, the home of the Marauders and the EDF's largest outpost. Alec, alongside Jon Kepler and Carmen Avila, kidnaps and extracts information from Colonel Broga, commander of the EDF's artillery base, revealing a path of entry through the Free Fire Zone into the Eos sector. Following The Badlands and Oasis' liberation, the Red Faction move into Eos by traversing the Free Fire Zone. Plans to liberate Eos by assaulting the EDF Central Command is thwarted by an unexpected EDF raid on the Red Faction's headquarters in The Badlands, forcing a retreat. The attack resulted in the death of Davies, Kepler and Carmen, leaving Alec, Samanya and a few survivors.

A deal is established, with Vasha granting the Red Faction the use of their particle accelerator inherited from Ultor to be combined with the Nano Forge, creating a weapon powerful enough to destroy the Hydra. As part of the deal, the Nano Forge would be returned to the Marauders once the war has ended.
