Red Faction (1)

PlayStation 2

The Red Faction PS2 demo was distributed on compilation demo discs (usually from magazines), as well as via a standalone disc requested directly from THQ.

Core Functionality

Single player gameplay only (no multiplayer function). Also includes an options menu, trailer, and slideshow of promotional images.

Contains a short 3-level single-player campaign with the following maps:

  • Turret Training Range (ps2_turr.rfl): Short level for demonstrating the GeoMod engine. Features an arsenal of explosive available to the player and several waves of guards to kill.
  • Icy Submarine Bay (ps2_sub.rfl): Icy submarine bay featuring a male miner warming his hands over a flaming oil drum, as well as a Submarine suspended on a crane. Hitting the button in the control room causes the vehicle to drop and break through the ice. After dropping the submarine, the player can pilot it to another submarine bay after killing an enemy submarine and a Sea Creature. The first part of this level appears to be a variation of L5S3: Sub Bay.
  • Docking Bay (ps2_L3S4.rfl): Docking bay level containing several guards and ending with the player fighting a Drone. This level is an early version of L3S4: Exit from Docking Bay.

Differences from Released Game

  • Hendrix and PA announcer use different voice actors.
  • Jump and landing sounds for the player are different.
  • Pain and death sounds for guard enemies are different.
  • Sea Creature enemy is much more challenging and has different sounds.
  • Suit Repair pickup has a different mesh.

Included Cut Content

  • 7 clutter objects:
    • 5 different icicles
    • Spotlight
    • Flaming oil drum
  • Hand warming animation (for adult male skeleton)
  • L7 vertical door texture and white "7" decal texture

MP Test dedicated server console

Commonly known as MP Test, this is an early beta of Red Faction's online multiplayer component.

Core Functionality

MP Test features multiplayer gameplay only. While MP Test does not include any data files from the single player component of the game, single player functionality within the engine is still present, and MP Test can load single player maps if the required data files are provided.

MP Test includes three multiplayer maps:

MP Test had one patch released (MP Test v1.10), which resolved gameplay balance issues and some bugs.

Differences from Released Game
  • Riot Guard and Elite Guard team colored skins are different.
  • MP Test is the only released version of Red Faction to use a native Windows command window for its dedicated server console.
  • While missing many others, MP Test contains two console commands that the released version of the game does not.
Included Cut Content
  • 3 table files:
    • dedicated_server.tbl - Table version of dedicated_server.txt.
    • ps2_multi.tbl - Config file for PS2 multiplayer settings (unused).
    • debug_menu.tbl - Config file for in-game developer debug menu (unused).
How to play
  • Download Red Faction Multiplayer Test
  • Note that MP Test suffers from all of the same functional issues as the stock game, but no patches exist to fix them. As a result, it is very unlikely you will even be able to launch MP Test unless you're using older hardware and an older operating system.
