Common Issues
Error "Please insert Red Faction II Disc 1" |
Cause: The specific cause of this issue is currently unknown. Solution: If you get this error when attempting to launch the game, remove any discs currently in your CD-ROM drive. You should also unmount any virtual drives you may be using through software such as PowerISO, MagicDisc, etc. If you don't have a CD-ROM drive, some users have reported that using a virtual CD drive program and creating an empty drive can fix the problem. This can be done through the software that was listed above. |
Error "At least 8 MB of available video memory is required" |
Cause: This error occurs when Red Faction II is launched on a system with 2GiB or more available video memory. At a technical level, the issue is caused by a signed DWORD being read as less than the minimum of 5MiB, and is resolved with the replacement of a signed less than comparison with an unsigned less than comparison.

Animations and audio desync in cutscenes |
Cause: This happens when the framerate exceeds 120. Solution: Limit framerate to 120. This can be done with 3rd party software like dgvoodoo2, rtss, or dxvk. |
Micro stuttering |
Cause: RF2 uses DirectX 8 which is forced to display in a borderless window in newer versions of Windows. Borderless windows will get micro stuttering when the framerate isn't much above the monitors refresh rate. Solution: Change the rendering api with 3rd party software such as d3d8to9 or dgvoodoo2. This will allow the game to run in exclusive fullscreen mode. |
Using night vision limits framerate to 30 |
Cause: This is caused by a setting in the rf2_config.ini file. Solution: In your RF2 installation directory, open rf2_config.ini with a text editor and set Motion_blur to 0. |
