Common Issues
Cause: This issue may be caused by a specific Steam update. Another cause, which applies to both Steam and GOG versions, is having an AMD CPU with more than 16 cores. Solution:
Go to the Steam game library and right click Red Faction: Armageddon.
Click the Properties tab and go to the Betas section. Click the arrow on the dropdown box and select
Use AMD Ryzen Master to enable "legacy compatibility mode". Alternatively, use the "Game Mode" profile provided by AMD to enable legacy mode. It is currently unknown whether Intel chips are impacted by this issue. Using Process Lasso to limit the number of cores the game can access may provide a potential solution. |
My game is consistently crashing or not running smoothly |
Answer: Here are the recommended compatibility settings for Armageddon on modern systems:
Additionally, patching the game executable to be large address aware, giving it an extra 2GBs of memory, has been found to consistently fix crashing and general stability issues alongside the outlined compatibility settings. To patch the executable, you can search for the "4GB Patch" tool on NTCore. The "CFF Explorer" on NTCore can also be used to manually patch the executable. This should not trigger VAC in Infestation Mode in the Steam version as it is not a cheat, although it should be used at your own risk during online. The GOG version does not use VAC. |
My game is lagging and controller input is not being detected |
Cause: This happens when you have multiple controllers connected, or your current controller is being detected as any controller other than the first controller Solution: Unplug all extra controllers or have your current controller connected as the first controller to fix this issue. Alternatively, disconnect all controllers and play with keyboard and mouse input. |
No mouse or keyboard input is being detected even after unplugging all controllers |
Cause: Virtual Joystick/Controller drivers can cause issues with keyboard and mouse input detection in Armageddon. Solution: Uninstall or disable any drivers relating to joysticks or controllers before attempting to play Armageddon with keyboard and mouse input. This issue only applies to virtual Joystick/Controller software and not standard XInput (such as Xbox 360 or Xbox One controllers). |
All text in the game is broken and audio is silent |
Cause: The player_options.rfao_pc file is likely corrupted. Solution: Delete the player_options.rfao_pc file and the game will generate a new one on startup. This will erase your Infestation and Ruin Mode progress. Campaign progress will be unaffected except all upgrades will be erased. This file can be found at:
|
Video settings won't save |
Cause: According to PCGamingWiki, the issue may be caused by newer versions of Windows. Solution: Set the rf4_launcher.exe file in your game directory to run in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode OR Windows XP (Service Pack 3) Compatibility Mode.
